Hip Pain Treatment in Western New York
Hip pain stopping you from lifting, running, squatting, climbing stairs, or even sleeping? You don't have to push through it — or settle for cookie-cutter rehab. As WNY's only board-certified Sports PT, we use objective testing and movement analysis to find the true driver of your hip pain and build a plan back to full performance.
Does this sound like you?
If two or more of these ring true, an assessment is worth it.
- Hip pain flares with running, squatting, or climbing stairs
- It's hard to get up from a low seat — or to sleep on that side
- Rest, stretching, or "activation" drills only helped for a while
- An injection or massage wore off after a few days
- Past physical therapy didn't fully fix it
Common hip conditions we assess & treat
Hip pain has many drivers — impingement, tendons, muscles, and nerves — and each needs a different loading strategy. These are the diagnoses we see most often, and our care adapts to the exact tissue, irritability, and demands of your sport.
Impingement & Labral Tears
Femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) and labral irritation — pinching or groin pain that flares with deep squats, sitting, and rotation.
ImpingementGluteal Tendinopathy & Bursitis
Outer-hip pain over the bone (greater trochanter) that worsens lying on your side or climbing stairs — also called trochanteric pain syndrome.
Lateral HipHip Flexor & Groin Strains
Front-of-hip and groin overload from sprinting, kicking, and change-of-direction sport — sharp with hip flexion and acceleration.
StrainPiriformis & Deep Glute Pain
Deep buttock pain that can refer down the leg — often from deep-rotator irritation and nerve sensitivity. Calmed with nerve glides and mobility.
Deep GluteIT Band & Runner's Hip
Lateral hip and thigh tightness and pain from repetitive loading — common in runners and high-mileage athletes.
OverusePost-Surgical & Structural
Rehab after hip surgery, plus developmental or structural hip conditions — rebuilt with graded loading, mobility, and control.
RecoveryWe find the true driver — not just the symptom
Most clinics still rely on generic stretching sheets and "activation" drills. We use objective tools to pinpoint exactly which muscles are underperforming and why — so your hip pain treatment is precise, measurable, and built for performance.
Handheld Dynamometry
We objectively measure hip flexor, extensor, abductor, and rotation strength to expose the asymmetries and deficits driving your pain — then build precision loading programs that speed recovery and prevent re-injury.
3D Movement & Gait Analysis
We evaluate how your hip moves under load — running, jumping, and change-of-direction — to see what the naked eye can't, so treatment targets the real mechanical fault.
Sport-Specific Functional Testing
From cutting mechanics for field athletes to squat depth for lifters, we pinpoint exactly which movement patterns provoke your symptoms — and why.

What Buffalo patients are saying
Alex did a great job with a sports injury I had and has also helped me after an ACL surgery. Incredibly knowledgeable — I'd recommend him to absolutely anyone. He answered every question outside of clinic and made me feel comfortable every step of the way.
Alex recently worked with my young daughter on calf tightness. He was patient, made her feel at ease, and sent us home with an exercise program tailored to her needs. I highly recommend Impulse Physical Therapy!
I started going for my shoulder and I've seen a significant difference since I started. Dr. Alex was very nice and helpful! Definitely recommend him for any PT needs.

Hip pain questions
Do I need a referral for hip pain physical therapy?+
No. New York is a direct-access state, so you can begin physical therapy with us without a doctor's referral. If your specific insurance plan requires one, we'll let you know during your discovery call.
Can physical therapy fix a hip labral tear or impingement (FAI) without surgery?+
Often, yes. Many people with labral tears and FAI manage symptoms very well with a conservative program — restoring hip mechanics, building gluteal and rotator strength, and managing load. We use objective testing to guide the plan and track progress, and we'll tell you honestly if a surgical opinion is warranted.
What's actually causing my hip pain?+
Hip pain can come from the joint itself (impingement, labral tears), tendons (gluteal tendinopathy), bursae, muscles (flexor or groin strains), the IT band, or deep rotators like the piriformis. Because each needs a different loading strategy, a hands-on assessment with objective testing is the fastest way to pinpoint the true source.
Why does my outer hip hurt when I lie on it or climb stairs?+
That pattern is classic for gluteal tendinopathy or trochanteric (lateral hip) pain. It responds well to load management plus progressive strengthening of the glutes and hip stabilizers — not just rest and stretching, which often makes it linger.
How long does hip pain take to heal?+
It varies with the diagnosis and how long symptoms have been present, but most patients see meaningful progress within a few weeks of starting targeted rehab. Tendon and joint issues that have lingered for months take longer, but consistent, progressive loading is what resolves them. We track recovery with objective testing so progress is measured, not guessed.
Do you treat runners, lifters, and athletes?+
Absolutely. We work with runners, lifters, tactical athletes, rotational and change-of-direction athletes, and active adults — building safe, sport-specific return-to-performance plans for every age and level.
