Elbow Pain
Is Elbow Pain Limiting Your Daily Activities?
Is elbow pain making it hard to do everyday activities?
Are you having trouble lifting weights, carrying groceries, or playing sports like tennis, golf, or pickleball because of elbow pain?
Does your elbow hurt when you’re at work or just doing chores around the house?
Does This Sound Like You?
❓ You anticipated pain relief in several days or weeks, but it hasn’t come.
❓You tried several home remedies such as heating pads, ice, and TENS units but they didn’t help?
❓You went to a masseuse a few times, but the discomfort returned after only a few days?
❓You visited the doctor, who examined you, gave you an injection, or prescribed some tablets, but the effects wore off quickly?
❓You previously underwent physical therapy, but it was unsuccessful?
❓You have concluded that you can manage the pain by avoiding the triggering actions?
We're Here to Help You Find Lasting Relief From Elbow Pain
Conditions We Commonly Treat That Cause Elbow Pain Include:
⚠️ Medial Epicondylitis (Golfer’s Elbow): Inflammation and pain in the inner side of the elbow caused by repetitive motions, similar to those seen in golf swings.
⚠️ Lateral Epicondylitis (Tennis Elbow): Inflammation and pain in the outer side of the elbow due to repetitive actions, often associated with activities like tennis.
⚠️ Biceps Rupture: A tear or rupture in the biceps muscle, which can occur from sudden impact or excessive strain.
⚠️ Joint Instability: When the elbow joint lacks proper stability, leading to discomfort, reduced range of motion, and potential risk of further injury.
Common Causes Of These Elbow-Related Conditions Include:
✅ Injury: Repeatedly using the same muscle groups without sufficient rest or mobility work or experiencing a sudden impact or excessive load to the elbow tissues.
✅ Impaired Mechanics: Stiffness in the joint or decreased flexibility in the surrounding muscles, which can result in a limited range of motion, weakness, and muscle imbalances.
✅ Chronic Compensations: Previous injuries or fear of future injury can cause individuals to avoid using certain muscle groups, leading to overuse of other tissues and potential imbalances.
Impulse Physical Therapy Approach to Elbow Pain
- Break the pain cycle through education, manual therapy, and increasing tissue mobility.
- Improve the mechanics of joints, muscles, and nerves in the area during daily functional tasks and exercise/sport-specific activities.
- Load the tissue to improve strength, power, and endurance to ensure that the tissues are prepared for all desired demands without fear of re-injury.
Elbow-Specific Treatments
- Decrease tissue inflammation through bracing, taping, and massage
- Improve tissue mobility through massage, instrument-assisted mobilization, cupping, & dry needling
- Decrease nerve sensitivity (numbness, tingling, pain that extends down the arm) through specific nerve exercises
- Progress plyometric and functional activities (throwing, catching, pushing, pulling, pressing)
Key Concepts:
- Tissue Healing: The body possesses natural healing abilities, but sometimes it may get stuck in the inflammatory phase of tissue repair. In such cases, assistance may be required to successfully transition to the recovery phase.
- Source of Pain vs. Imaging Results: Pain experienced by an individual may not always directly correlate with the findings on X-rays or MRI scans. It’s possible to see tissue damage on imaging without experiencing pain or functional limitations. Conversely, pain may arise without any visible abnormalities on imaging, often due to nervous tissue oversensitivity.
- Soreness after Exercise: While soreness following exercise is not the ultimate goal, it is not always a cause for concern. The body needs to experience an overload that causes tissue micro-damage to achieve genuine strength gains. As the tissues recover, they become thicker and stronger. Monitoring soreness can help determine if the tissue is ready for increased load, should maintain the current level, or needs a reduction in training intensity until it is adequately prepared.
- Returning to Activities: With the right education, proper mechanics, and gradual tissue loading, it is almost always possible to return to previous or desired activities after an injury or setback. These factors are crucial in facilitating a successful and sustainable return to activities.
