Does this sound like you?

If two or more of these ring true, an assessment is worth it.

  • Relief you expected in days or weeks still hasn't come
  • Ice, heat, braces, or a TENS unit only helped for a while
  • Massage or an injection wore off after a few days
  • Past physical therapy didn't fully fix it
  • You're avoiding gripping, lifting, or your sport to dodge the pain
Pain past a week or two? Early, targeted care prevents worsening tendon damage.
(01) Conditions We Treat

Common elbow injuries we assess & treat

Most elbow pain comes from repetitive stress or a breakdown in how the shoulder, elbow, and wrist work together. These are the diagnoses we see most often — and each responds well to targeted, sport-specific rehab.

Tennis Elbow

Lateral epicondylitis — irritation of the extensor tendon on the outer elbow. Common in racket sports, lifters, and desk workers with poor wrist mechanics.

Lateral

Golfer's Elbow

Medial epicondylitis — inner-elbow pain tied to gripping, pulling, and rotation in golf, baseball, pickleball, and heavy lifting.

Medial

Elbow Tendonitis & Overuse

Tendon pain from training volume, poor mechanics, or a lack of grip and forearm strength — often before a true "tear" ever shows up.

Overuse

Nerve Irritation

Numbness, tingling, or pain running down the forearm — like cubital tunnel — calmed with specific nerve-glide and mobility work.

Nerve

Thrower's & Overhead Elbow

Inner-elbow overload from throwing, serving, and overhead sport. We retrain mechanics to offload the elbow and protect the UCL.

Athlete

Post-Injury & Stiffness

Lingering stiffness, weakness, and lost range after a sprain, fracture, or surgery — rebuilt with graded loading and mobility.

(02) The Impulse Difference

We find the real cause — not just the symptom

Most clinics treat inflammation and hope it sticks. We use objective tools to pinpoint exactly which muscles are underperforming and why — so your elbow pain treatment is precise, measurable, and built to last.

Handheld Dynamometry

We quantify grip, wrist, and forearm strength to find the exact deficits driving your pain — then build precision loading programs that speed recovery and prevent re-injury.

3D Motion Analysis

For pickleball, tennis, baseball, and CrossFit athletes, we break down shoulder, elbow, and wrist mechanics to understand the why behind the pain — so treatment is sport-specific, not generic.

Orthopedic Testing & Screens

Special tests and movement screens isolate the true source of pain, so we fix the mechanism behind the injury — not just the inflammation on the surface.

(03) How We Treat It

Research-driven elbow rehab, built around you

Every program is individualized and updated weekly based on objective data. Here's the proven path from painful to powerful.

01

Soft Tissue & Manual Therapy

Calm pain and restore mobility:

  • Instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilization (IASTM)
  • Myofascial & cross-friction release
  • Joint mobilizations
02

Targeted Strengthening

Biomechanically proven loading:

  • Wrist extensor eccentric drops
  • Tyler Twist with a FlexBar
  • Forearm pronation / supination
  • Grip progression to dynamometry benchmarks
03

Shoulder & Scapular Training

Because shoulder weakness drives elbow overuse:

  • Scapular retraction band work
  • Serratus punches
  • Rotator cuff external rotation
  • Mid-trap activation
04

Return-to-Play Progressions

For racket athletes, throwers, and lifters:

  • Sport-specific mechanics retraining
  • Plyometric & functional loading
  • Clear return-to-sport criteria

(04) When To Get Help

Don't wait it out. Get assessed.

If elbow pain lasts longer than one to two weeks, worsens with gripping or lifting, or interferes with your sport, early treatment prevents worsening tendon damage.

Tendons don't heal on a "rest and wait" plan. They need the right load at the right time — too little keeps them irritated, too much sets you back.

No referral needed in New York. Direct access means you can start physical therapy with us immediately — no doctor's note, no waiting.

(05) Why Impulse

Why athletes choose us for elbow pain treatment

WNY's Only Board-Certified Sports PT

A credential held by a tiny fraction of therapists nationwide — and the highest standard in sports rehab. You're in expert hands from the first visit.

One-on-One, Every Session

Your full appointment is with your doctor of physical therapy — no aides, no rotating staff, no cookie-cutter exercises. Plus text access between visits.

Advanced Strength Testing

Handheld dynamometry, 3D motion analysis, and precision loading programs backed by research — tools most Buffalo clinics simply don't have.

Built for the Comeback

We're a clinic that specializes in athletic and orthopedic rehab — not high-volume general PT. The result: a faster, safer return to sport, stronger than before.

What Buffalo patients are saying

Alex did a great job with a sports injury I had and has also helped me after an ACL surgery. Incredibly knowledgeable — I'd recommend him to absolutely anyone. He answered every question outside of clinic and made me feel comfortable every step of the way.

— Stacy

Alex recently worked with my young daughter on calf tightness. He was patient, made her feel at ease, and sent us home with an exercise program tailored to her needs. I highly recommend Impulse Physical Therapy!

— BH

I started going for my shoulder and I've seen a significant difference since I started. Dr. Alex was very nice and helpful! Definitely recommend him for any PT needs.

(07) FAQs

Elbow pain questions

Do I need a referral for elbow pain physical therapy?+

No. New York is a direct-access state, so you can begin physical therapy with us without a doctor's referral. If your specific insurance plan requires one, we'll let you know during your discovery call.

Can physical therapy fix tennis elbow without injections or surgery?+

In most cases, yes. Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) responds very well to targeted eccentric loading, manual therapy, and grip and forearm strengthening. We use objective strength testing to guide the program and progress it safely — helping you avoid repeat injections that tend to wear off quickly. Learn whether braces actually help tennis elbow.

What's the difference between tennis elbow and golfer's elbow?+

Tennis elbow affects the tendons on the outside of the elbow (lateral epicondylitis), usually aggravated by gripping and wrist extension. Golfer's elbow affects the inside of the elbow (medial epicondylitis), tied to gripping, pulling, and rotation. Both are overuse tendon injuries, and both respond to load-based rehab — but the specific exercises differ, which is why an individualized assessment matters.

How long does elbow pain take to heal?+

It varies with the diagnosis and how long symptoms have been present, but most patients see meaningful progress within a few weeks of starting targeted rehab. Tendon injuries that have lingered for months take longer, but consistent, progressive loading is what gets them better. We track recovery with objective testing so progress is measured, not guessed.

Why won't my elbow pain go away on its own?+

Tendons often get "stuck" in the inflammatory phase of healing and need the right amount of load to move into the recovery phase. Rest, braces, and ice can calm symptoms temporarily, but without rebuilding strength and correcting the mechanics that overloaded the tendon, the pain usually returns. That's exactly what our program addresses.

Do you treat athletes and which sports?+

Absolutely. We work with racket athletes (tennis, pickleball), golfers, throwers, CrossFit athletes, lifters, and active adults — building safe, sport-specific return-to-play plans for every age and level.

Ready to fix your elbow pain?

If gripping, lifting, or your sport is being held hostage by elbow pain, don't wait it out. Book your elbow assessment today — and let's get you back to the activities you love, with a clear plan and objective progress every step of the way.
