Dizziness and Concussion Symptoms
Are You Feeling Hindered By Dizziness Or Experiencing Symptoms Of A Concussion?
Has the condition persisted for an extended period for you or your athlete? Do simple tasks like reading, using electronic devices, walking, exercising, or playing sports become challenging due to dizziness, nausea, blurred vision, or poor balance?
Our extensive research has identified six distinct types of concussions commonly seen in athletes. Patients may exhibit characteristics of two or three of these profiles in most cases simultaneously. The six profiles are cervical (neck), mental/fatigue, eye/vestibular, head/headache, and emotional/mood. At Impulse Physical Therapy, our highly skilled therapists are equipped to efficiently and effectively identify the specific profile that best matches each patient’s condition.
Our approach to understanding a patient’s concussion profile involves considering their narrative, medical history, and current symptoms. Recognizing the signs and symptoms is not enough; a thorough physical examination is crucial. Our comprehensive orthopedic assessment evaluates the range of motion, pain threshold, and voluntary control of the cervical spine.
Once the patient’s unique profile has been determined, appropriate and effective treatment can be initiated. It’s important to note that research has shown that traditional methods of rest and inactivity are not as effective as once believed. Waiting for the brain to heal by avoiding stimulation, dimming lights, and rest is no longer preferred. Instead, concussions are actively treated with proactive and targeted interventions.
Common Symptoms We Address:
- Visual impairments (ocular)
- Dizziness, including BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) - (vestibular)
- Headaches, including tension, migraine, and light sensitivity - (cervical)
- Mental and physical exhaustion - (vestibular)
- Sleep difficulties, including initiating and maintaining sleep
- Cognitive issues, such as difficulty focusing, poor recall, and impaired judgment
- Emotional symptoms include lower-than-average tolerance for frustration/irritability, melancholy, and panic attacks.
Concussion Rehabilitation Steps:
- Identify the primary concussion symptoms and impairments experienced by the patient.
- Address specific deficiencies through targeted exercises tailored to the patient’s profile. This may involve mobilization techniques for the neck, balance exercises, vestibulo-ocular retraining, and an aerobic exertion program. Additionally, we provide training to enhance rest, manage stress, maintain adequate hydration, and optimize dietary intake.
- Gradually reintroduce exercise and sports, depending on the symptoms and individual response.
